I asked the server at the new neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant which she recommends – the pho or the lemongrass rice noodle bowl. She thought for a moment and said that since it’s not hot outside today, I shouldn’t have the soup. It’s funny how many people think the opposite – that pho is for cool weather.

For some reason, Americans in general have never embraced the concept of eating hot and spicy foods when the weather is hot in order to sweat and cool off. I suspect our fear of sweat is at the root of it, as is the fact that my (and many others’) English and Scottish ancestors had little concept of too-hot weather or spicy food.
If by cool you mean “when hell freezes over” then I would agree with them.
It’s cold here (4″ wet snow this morning) and we had soup for supper.
