Well, it’s Tuesday already! I can’t believe my surgery was way back last Thursday. And the past two days have been pretty much a blur of napping, reading, and eating.
Yesterday we just hung out at the hotel all day. Even the evening, they have a “reception” of a light meal in the dining area. Apparently, on Mondays it’s red bean and rice. Sign me up! So our big adventure was getting my low speed ass down the elevator to the main floor of the hotel and into the dining area for a plate of red beans and rice. Unfortunately, the sauasage in the red beans was a bit too chewy and I had to pass on that. You see, one main source of pain is the muscle the surgeon cut to get into the skull. It’s used for chewing, and so I’m on a soft foods diet until it heals up better. Good news, though – I can feel it improving!
I tried watching some TV, and it was all so crappy I couldn’t bring myself to do it very long. But I did catch most of the final act of Lindsay Lohan’s first film. And I finished a couple magazines, too.
Today, we decided it was time for another bath. It’s easier said than done, since I’m not allowed to get the surgical wound wet. But we took it slow and got all the parts cleaned, which feels really good. Then Beth demonstrated how loud the dishwasher in our kitchenette is (answer: excrutiatingly loud, especially for someone who is having ear issues).
After that we set out to find downtown Covington. We knew from the street map that there must be a “old town” Covington, but sadly it looks like it’s mainly just an intersection of main roads from different directions. There are a few restaurants there, and a coffee shop, but until they re-design the regional traffic to go around main street, it’s never going to be a nice place for upscale businesses to flock. But we had lunch there at Buster’s Place; I enjoyed a glass of Coke in a glass with ice (nothing that something about my sense of taste has changed since the surgery since Coke doesn’t taste “normal” anymore) and a big bowl of chicken and sausage gumbo. The gumbo was quite good, and had a nice thick dark roux (the roux makes or breaks a gumbo). Beth had a big salad which could’ve been made anywhere; it was decent enough, but didn’t have much character.
I noticed a few people staring at me, which reminded me that the side of my head isn’t too pleasant looking at the moment. I’ve got a strip of hair shaved off and underneath is a long purplish surgery wound with both sides stapled together. It looks more like roast beef than it does someone who’s there to east roast beef!
Anyhow, after lunch Beth paid up and we went to the coffee shop. Having already had a big glass of Coke, I didn’t feel like anything else. But Beth ordered a couple cookies and a latte while I sat and grossed out the other patrons with my head wound.
After that we came back to the hotel, and I crawled back in bed for another nap, which leads me to the here and now. It’s mid-afternoon and I don’t know what I want to spend the rest of the afternoon doing. Maybe we should go outside and enjoy the swimming pool area. Tomorrow I want to go to a park.
And the day after that our big adventure is to drive all the way back out to Baton Rouge to see Dr. Gianoli. It’s about an hour drive from here, and if he likes what he sees he’ll take my staples out, so my head won’t look like a cut of meat anymore! 🙂
