Grow Local Day – May 14

Did you know that today, May 14, 2009 is Denver’s “Grow Local Day”? Yes, it is! It was so declared by Mayor John Hickenlooper. And I can’t believe I had to read about it only instead of hearing about it first from Beth, who’s become quite the local Denver expert. Here’s a story about Hickenlooper’s… Continue reading Grow Local Day – May 14

our home value is going down

In Broomfield, everyone is getting their “2009 Real Property Notice of Valuation” letters last week and this week. Folks are in an uproar because the county is assessing property so high, when property values are actually going down. Some say it’s an intentional act on the part of the Broomfield government to drive up property… Continue reading our home value is going down

Humans Originated Near Current Border of Angola and Namibia

Thanks to modern genetic research, we’ve known for a while that humans all descended from the same stock (“Mitochondrial Eve” is our common female ancestor) somewhere in Africa.  Yes, all of us white folks are the result of a genetic mutation that happened some time later, contrary to what a lot of white supremacists and… Continue reading Humans Originated Near Current Border of Angola and Namibia

Sugar Stacks – How Much Sugar Is in That?

Next time you give your kid a box of raisins because it’s supposedly a “healthy” snack, consider how much sugar is concentrated in those dried raisins. Happy Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, April 22, 2009.  I spent most of the day working on a volunteer project with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, along with 6 of my Polycom coworkers.  You see, we get one day off per year to do a volunteer project, and the 7 of us chose this one.  We planted lots of… Continue reading Happy Earth Day

Stones from the Sky

Would anyone like to join me for a lecture – and almost certainly a slide show – from acclaimed aerial photographer Michael Collier? It’s at the DMNS on the evening of Wednesday May 6. Here are more details: http://www.dmns.org/main/en/General/Education/AdultProgram/Lectures/Programs/StonesFromTheSky.htm It’s just $15 since I’m a member of the museum.

Cheerleader Ninjas

I just learned of a film released in 2002 called “Cheerleader Ninjas.”  It’s showing at The Bug Theatre (in Denver) on April 7.  From what I’ve seen, it looks nothing like what I have in mind for “Kung Fu Sushi Chefs” although the titles are a bit similar. Here’s the website: Cheerleader Ninjas Official Website
